‘Fine Whitework’ can refer to any form of white embroidery worked on a fine scale, but here refers to the technique taught at the Royal School of Needlework, where key whitework techniques are combined to create illustrative designs. I have developed a system for teaching whitework in which the spectrum of whitework techniques which span history, are considered together as a ‘tonal scale’, looking at the level of ‘whiteness’ they either add to or take way from the ground fabric.
This invaluable little book explores this tonal scale and how the many stitches used within fine whitework can be slotted into the scale as an aide to planning an effective design. It also discusses how to plan the essential technical order of work of a fine whitework design involving a second layer of fabric, and the use of net insertion.
