Such buildings abounded in the exquisite raised embroidery panels of the 17th century, depicting contemporary buildings which often had the rather fantastical appearance of castles and palaces.

The design is based on a cosy Dorset cottage I saw whilst teaching in the area, and captures the magical abode of the witch in the tale of Hansel and Gretel. The design will introduce you to a broad range of stumpwork techniques which are useful for creating depictions of architecture.

You will create the cottage using needlelace, and the roof as a ‘slip’, a piece of counted embroidery worked on a separate fabric before being applied to the base. The gardens use a mix of applied mesh ribbons, beads and surfaces stitches such as French knots, Turkey rug stitch and looped metal purls.

A sprinkling of tiny spangles mark the path to the cottage symbolic of the crumbs left by Hansel and Gretel! Ideal for those with a little experience of stumpwork embroidery.

The completed design measures approximately 10x10cm.
