These brooches are based on these delicate floral patterns, and use goldwork techniques in an array of modern multicoloured metallic threads. Goldwork was traditionally used for wearable items, rather than just framed items, and these brooches are highly wearable. They are formed by working on a base of firm calico in an embroidery hoop, padding using pre-marked felt shapes filled with sheep’s wool. They are then embellished using a wide range of metal threadwork techniques such as the use of pearl purl, couching, cutting and applying small pieces of tubular metal purls, combined with spangles and beads. The body is padded with threads before it is covered with pleated iridescent metal. Once complete, the brooches are backed with 100% wool baize woven in the UK, and a sturdy brooch pin is added.
