{"product_id":"mosaic-pheasant-embroidery-kit","title":"Mosaic Pheasant Embroidery Kit","description":"\u003cp\u003eI grew up in Derbyshire and one of the distinct memories of my childhood is the call of pheasants, and the flash of jewel-like colour as male birds ran away at the sound of car or footstep.  I always wanted to work a pheasant in embroidery, using raised work and metal threads.  17\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Century embroideries invariably included exotic and colourful birds such as parrots and kingfishers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Sometimes these were realistically depicted in silk shading, others used intricate dimensional stitches to represent the array of textures to be found in feathers. The design was also inspired by Roman mosaics which often depicted birds, including pheasants, which are believed to have been brought to Britain by the Romans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  The stitches used are designed to resemble the tiny interlocking patterns of the mosaics. The pheasant is first padded with layers of felt, then the various design shapes are outlined using gold, silver and copper pearl purls.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  These shapes are filled in with different patterns, using a mix of silk-wrapped purls and silk gimp (specially made for me in the UK), metal spangles and tubular metal purls.  The border is worked in Or Nué, using coloured silks to couch down metal threads, revealing a pattern as you work.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  The hillock uses felt padding overlaid with metallic mesh ribbon, with beads and French knots.
