This detailed embroidery was inspired by an incredible 16th century book in the collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, known as ‘MS Ashmole 1504’. This document contains a wealth of hand-painted contemporary imagery on parchment, depicting named plants, animals and birds, scenes of buildings and landscapes, alphabets, stylised ornamental motifs and a wealth of contemporary domestic paraphernalia.
The mitten design takes inspiration from the motifs and colours in MS Ashmole 1504, such as the beautiful peacock, the landscape of fantastical buildings, the stylised lettering and plant forms. I have combined these together in my own way and have used an eclectic range of techniques and materials, some of which would have been familiar in Tudor England, but with the addition of the fabulous materials available to us today, and which sit so perfectly well within a piece inspired by this wonderful historic resource.
Your kit includes all the carefully curated exquisite materials required to complete the embroidered gauntlet and to make the finished design up as an Elizabethan-style mitten which you may either wish to display or perhaps even use as a scissor case.
Techniques include: colouring the fabric with pencil crayons, appliqué of organza, pleating of metals and fettuccine braids, mesh ribbons, silk wrapped purls, sequins, natural shading, pearl purl, counted tent stitch, satin stitch.
The kit includes an extremely comprehensive and extensively illustrated instruction manual.
Videos further illustrating the stitch processes will also be supplied on purchase and will be accessible for your personal use only, via private YouTube.

MY THREAD IS DIFFERENT TO THAT IN THE PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DESIGN
Thread colours may vary somewhat due to dyeing processes and can appear different in reality due to photographic distortion. Due to limitations posed by suppliers, we also reserve the right to substitute project materials with suitable alternatives to those illustrated if absolutely necessary.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT NEW DESIGNS?
Please go to Jenny’s website where you can join the mailing list to find out about all new releases. We promise only to send you relevant embroidery-related news and not to pass your details to third parties.
