It appears to be unknown where the term ‘mellor’ came from and people have put forward many ideas. Wherever it came from, it is an indispensable tool for any embroiderer’s workbox. Traditionally used for metal thread/gold work, the narrow (but not sharp) tip is used for guiding metal threads, particularly tubular purl, carefully into position, avoiding touching and therefore discolouring the metal. The tapered flatter end is used for pushing and settling threads into position and for crimping metal threads when forming bends in couching. I also use my mellor as a general laying tool for smoothing all types of threads, and for any prodding and tweaking where a fine but blunt-tipped tool is required.
These mellors are designed and precision hand-made by my father using finest stainless steel which prevents tarnish and therefore any discolouration of your work. Includes a hole at the large end to allow you to add a keeper or hanging ribbon.
Here you can choose a mellor which is engraved with one of my favourite sewing-related quotations from the folk song ‘A Stitch in Time’ by Mike Waterson, ‘Isn’t it true, what small can do, with a thread, a thought and a stitch or two!’.
Alternatively, you may prefer the mellor to be engraved with your choice of initials or a name.
Please advise your choice of initials in the comment box at the checkout.
These mellors are engraved after you have placed your order so delivery can be delayed by a couple of weeks.
If you require delivery of the mellor, and the rest of your order, by a certain date, please advise in the comment box at the checkout.
